Filled Die
A filled die error occurs when grease, oil, dirt or debris lodges in the recessed engraving of a coinage die, preventing metal from flowing fully into parts of the design. The resulting coin is struck with missing or partially missing letters, numerals or design elements. Filled die errors are common on high-volume circulation coinage and range from barely noticeable to strikingly incomplete.
Explanation
The design on a coin is formed by recessed elements cut into the die: letters, digits and devices are engraved below the die face, and the coin's metal is driven into them under pressure. Coinage presses are lubricated to survive hundreds of strikes per minute, and that lubricant, mixed with dust and metal particles, can collect in these recesses - most often in shallow, isolated elements such as digits and letters. Wherever the filling sits, the planchet metal cannot enter, and the corresponding part of the design is left blank or ghosted. Because the obstruction can shift or be dislodged, the same die may produce a sequence of coins with errors that fade, move or vanish.
Identification
The hallmark is selective absence: individual letters, the date, or a small design feature is missing or weak, while the remainder of the coin is sharply struck. Missing dates are the most sought-after form, followed by missing denomination legends. The missing elements are simply flat, blank fields - there is no damage, no incuse marking and no displaced metal. This distinguishes a filled die from a worn die (uniform softness across the whole design), from a polished or abraded coin (post-mint surface loss), and from an altered coin (tooling marks).
Example
A typical Australian example is a ten-cent coin on which the date reads 19_4 because one digit failed to strike, or a five-cent piece missing the letters of AUSTRALIA at the top of the reverse. Occasionally a coin shows several letters of a legend drifting out one by one across successive strikes from the same die, allowing collectors to assemble a disappearance sequence.
Important Considerations
- Severity: Value depends on how much is missing - a coin lacking its entire date or denomination is significant; a soft letter or two is a curiosity.
- Consistency: Because the fill can move, no two filled-die coins from the same die are identical; this irregularity actually supports authenticity.
- Authentication: The blank areas must show undisturbed original surface. Elements removed by polishing, grinding or acid will leave traces that close inspection reveals.
