Die Crack

A die crack is a raised line appearing on the struck coin, formed when the hardened steel die itself develops a crack and coin metal flows into that crack during striking. Die cracks are the earliest and most common stage of die deterioration, and serious collectors study their positions and progression as a way of tracking the working life of individual dies.

Explanation

Coinage dies are subjected to enormous, repeated pressures - often hundreds of tonnes per strike - and after tens or hundreds of thousands of strikes, fatigue can open fine cracks in the die face. Because the crack is a gap in the steel, metal from each planchet is forced into it under striking pressure, emerging as a raised fin or line on the coin. As the die continues in service the crack lengthens and widens, so successive coins show a developing crack pattern. If the crack widens into an actual chip of steel breaking away at the die's edge, the raised blob known as a cud forms (see the Cud entry in this glossary).

Identification

A die crack appears as a raised line of metal integral to the coin's surface, often following an irregular path across the design. It may be hairline-thin or broad and irregular, sometimes accompanied by raised roughness where the crack branches. The crucial diagnostic is repetition: coins struck from the same die show the same crack in the same position, and crack patterns that grow from coin to coin. This distinguishes die cracks from scratches (incuse, random), from lamination (surface flaking independent of the design), and from damage (which interrupts rather than follows the struck relief).

Example

On Australian decimal coins, die cracks are frequently seen radiating across the platypus on well-used twenty-cent dies or through the lettering of older five-cent issues. Error collectors often seek a progression set: a coin with a short crack, a later coin with the crack fully crossing the field, and the eventual cud from the same die.

Important Considerations

  • Progression: Die cracks grow with use, so documenting their stages can attribute coins to a particular die and period.
  • Value: Minor cracks add little value, but dramatic cracks - long, branched, or connecting design elements - and crack progressions are collected.
  • Integrity: A genuine die crack is raised metal firmly attached to the surface; a line that can be felt as a scratch, or which shows displaced metal, is post-mint damage.
