The Set
The 1992 mint set commemorated the Games of the XXV Olympiad in Barcelona, and it marks a dividing line in the series: it was the first year set issued after the withdrawal of the 1 cent and 2 cent coins from circulation in February 1992, and the first to contain just the six denominations that remain current today. Collectors seeking the final 1 cent and 2 cent coins must therefore look to the 1991 set, the last of the eight-coin issues. The 1992 set was priced at $15.00 and had a mintage of 118,528.
The Barcelona Dollar
The set's theme is carried by a commemorative one dollar coin honouring the Barcelona Olympic Games, which joins the five standard denominations - 5 cent, 10 cent, 20 cent, 50 cent and two dollars - each carrying its usual design. All six coins are struck with the Raphael Maklouf obverse, in its final years of use on Australian coinage. The Barcelona dollar gives the set its collector interest, and the one-year composition change makes it a natural companion piece to the 2006 anniversary set, which brought the small coins back for one last appearance.
The Six-Coin Era
The move to six coins has proved permanent, and every year set since 1992 has contained the same denominations. The withdrawal of the bronze coins meant the mint set became the only annual product in which a complete set of the year's coinage could still be acquired, a role it retains to this day. For collectors building a run of the series, the 1992 set is the point where the modern era begins: cheaper to complete than the early wallet years, but with the same one-set-per-year rhythm that defines the collection.
